Step 1: Clay Preparation: The clay is sourced from fertile fields along the Quao River, where mineral-rich sediments have been naturally deposited over generations. Once collected, the clay is moistened and soaked overnight to soften, then blended with water and sand in precise proportions to achieve a strong yet workable consistency. It is carefully kneaded by hand to remove impurities, resulting in a smooth, uniform clay ready for shaping.

Step 2: Hand Shaping: Bau Truc pottery is shaped entirely by hand, without the use of a potter’s wheel. Artisans form the clay while slowly stepping backward – a distinctive traditional technique often described as “made by hand, shaped by movement.” This method gives each piece an organic form, ensuring no two creations are ever the same.

Step 3: Natural Sun Drying: After shaping, the pottery is left to dry naturally under the sun. This stage allows the clay to breathe, stabilize its structure, and prepare for its most critical transformation: firing.

Step 4: Pattern Carving & Decoration: Once the clay reaches a semi-dry state, artisans decorate each piece by hand. Patterns are carved directly into the surface, drawing inspiration from nature and Cham culture – reflecting waves, plants, and traditional symbols.

Step 5: Open-Air Firing: Unlike many other ceramic traditions, Bau Truc pottery is left unglazed and fired in the open air using wood, straw, and rice husks. Oxygen-rich flames come into direct contact with the clay, creating natural scorch marks and distinctive black-to-brown tones that can never be replicated.

Step 6: Cooling & Finishing: After firing, each piece is left to cool slowly in the open air. Some works are gently polished with leaves or natural oils to enhance their color, texture, and subtle sheen.
