CHAM CERAMIC

Cham pottery is one of the most distinctive traditional pottery styles of Central Vietnam. It is notable for being hand-shaped—mostly by women who carefully turn and shape each piece using simple tools—and for its open-fire firing method using wood and straw for about 7–8 hours at around 800°C. The pottery is usually unglazed; the firing process and the interaction with fire and wind create natural streaks and patterns that are highly characteristic.

On November 29, 2022, Cham pottery was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
